It admittedly has been a long time since IoH has written a blog article. I was inspired to look back on the previous blog posts that we wrote during our early years as an organization, and I can't help but feel so proud at how far we've come.
As some of you may or may not know, we started in April 2012 as "Musical Minds". We didn't know where this journey was going to take us. We only knew that we wanted to be able to put instruments into the hands of people who could really use some cheering up - some "musical wellness" (a term that we quickly coined). After buying a bunch of instruments - which was accomplished by using some money that was supposed to go towards dental work - Andy was able to make his vision a reality. He was able to give people in recovery - of all musical abilities - a chance to play the musical instruments they loved.
As we started to bring our "rock stage" of instruments to wellness and recovery centers and behavioral health treatment settings, we immediately saw changes in the people we were helping through the power of music. We saw people who were barely verbal start to speak; others gained the self-confidence to try new things in other aspects of their life after performing; both participants and staff expressed that IoH gave our participants goals to aspire towards that were being incorporated into their Individualized Recovery Plans; and others were staying out of the hospital because they didn't want to miss a chance to play their favorite instrument. The list goes on... and we have heard so many positive stories about the way IoH has brought hope and joy into so many lives since we started back in 2012.
It continues to be an honor and a privilege every day to be able to bring the power of music to so many. This past Fiscal Year 2017, we served over 1,000 unique program participants..and we are on track in Fiscal Year 2018 to serve several more. It is exciting to watch IoH grow and expand, but this does not happen without work, and without support from those around us. We have so many wonderful people helping behind the scenes to make this dream a reality. Our Board of Directors works tirelessly to continue to ensure that IoH remains a solid, stable, and grounded organization, as we move towards our 6th year of existence. Together, with the Board, this coming fiscal year, we plan to continue our ongoing work in establishing policies and procedures, as well as revising and updating our strategic plan. We also have several volunteers who help us set up, take down, load and unload, and also support and facilitate during programming. With their help, our programming becomes a much smoother process. In the coming years, we will continue to cultivate and grow our volunteer program to help make IoH a well-oiled music-making machine!
We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone out there who has supported us in every possible way. As we move into our 6th year of bringing our special musical wellness to those who need it most - and as we expand to other populations who can benefit from the mental and physical wellness that music can bring - IoH looks forward to creating new and exciting stories and experiences to share with all of our supporters about the power of music. Stay tuned!
